#ArtThursdays

See Me Through This Exhibition at Thames-Side Studios

1 Oct - 23 Oct 2022

For this week's #ArtThursday feature we headed to see Frieze Sculpture 2022 in The Regent’s Park. Curated by Clare Lilley (Yorkshire Sculpture Park Director) for the tenth consecutive year. The awesome line-up consists of 19 international artists, and it was the perfect way to spend an Autumn day at this public art exhibition.

See Me Through This is a visual art and creative writing project made by artist/writer Jill Mueller in collaboration with Swedish artist Maja Daniels.

At age 39, Jill Mueller tested positive for a BRCA1 gene mutation, a hereditary genetic mutation that gives her a very high risk for developing breast and ovarian cancers. Patients like Jill are offered the choice to undergo surgeries to remove their healthy breasts, ovaries and fallopian tubes to minimise their risk of developing cancer.
Early in her medical process, Jill invited photographer Maja Daniels – a stranger she had met only once before – to accompany her on what she knew would be a physically and emotionally transformative journey.

Merging creative non-fiction with photography, archive imagery and creative interventions, See Me Through This traces the medical journey of a healthy woman who receives unexpected results of a genetic test, and sheds light on the wider implications of learning what’s hidden in our DNA.

Jill makes art about the human condition – the inner and outer stories that make us. She has a specific interest in narrative, identity, health, and our relationship to nature. Her work leans into long-term projects that draw from many different techniques to bring a subject to life visually. Creative writing is core to her practice.

Maja Daniels is a Swedish photography-based artist. Her work is influenced by her studies in sociology and can be described as a multi-layered academic and artistic practice that includes sociological methodology, sound, moving image and archive materials, aiming to further explore each medium’s performative functions.
